In the United States, The EM1 chassis 1999 and 2000 Honda Civic Si was the first use of of a B-Series DOHC VTEC motor in the standard Honda Civic lineup. Previously the B16A2 and B16A3 were available in the 2-seat targa top Honda del Sol only, which had a limited audience.

The B16A2 motor found in the EM1 chassis laid the foundation for the tuner culture explosion in the early 2000s. The iconic car came with a previously unseen Electron Blue Pearl color, later released on the Honda Prelude and 1st generation CRV due to its popularity.
